To guide them to the underworld of Rarohenga, or to protect the living from those who would cause harm, ancient legends speak of guardians rising from the earth. These are not benevolent spirits, but formidable entities bound by the duty of the night: the Guardians of Wairua.

En los rincones sombrÃos de Roroa, donde el velo entre Te Ao Marama (el mundo de la luz) y Te Po (el mundo espiritual) se vuelve más fino durante el Te PÅ-nui (la larga noche), los espÃritus de los difuntos, conocidos como Wairua, a veces se encuentran perdidos o inquietos. Para guiarlos al inframundo de Rarohenga, o para proteger a los vivos de aquellos que causarÃan daño, las antiguas leyendas hablan de guardianes que se levantan de la tierra. No se trata de espÃritus benevolentes, sino de entidades formidables obligadas por el deber de la noche: los Guardianes de Wairua.
